In 1978, he and his family fled from Vietnam to Hong Kong as refugees due to the fall of Saigon. He grew up in Hong Kong and later moved to California, where he attended Alhambra High School. He graduated from the USC School of Cinematic Arts in 1999.

Ke Huy Quan became a child actor at age 12 when he was cast as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom by Steven Spielberg. He impressed Spielberg with his martial arts skills and his ability to speak English. He went on to star as Data in The Goonies, another adventure-comedy classic. He also appeared in other films and TV shows such as It Takes a Thief, Passenger, Breathing Fire, Encino Man, Red Pirate, Second Time Around, Together We Stand, Head of the Class, Tales from the Crypt, and The Big Eunuch and the Little Carpenter.
