Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway Story: The Story of Anurup Bhattacharya and Sagarika Bhattacharya

Anurup Bhattacharya and Sagarika Bhattacharya moved to Norway in 2007. They were accused of bad parenting and their children were taken away by Norway’s child welfare service in May 2011. The parents were charged with providing unsuitable clothes and toys, slapping their child once, and not giving their children enough space to play. They also had objections to Sagarika hand-feeding the baby and children sleeping on the same bed as their parents.

The case caused a diplomatic row between India and Norway, with the Indian government criticizing Norway’s child welfare service for taking the children away. After a legal battle, the custody of the children was awarded to their father’s brother, who brought them back to India. Sagarika had to undergo another round of legal battle in India to get custody of her children. In 2013, she was granted custody and now lives a private life with her children in Kolkata, India.
