Rahul Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970 in New Delhi, India. He belongs to the Nehru-Gandhi family, which has produced three prime ministers of India: his great-grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandmother Indira Gandhi and his father Rajiv Gandhi. His mother Sonia Gandhi is also a prominent leader of the Congress Party.
Rahul Gandhi spent his early childhood between Delhi and Dehradun. He was homeschooled after his grandmother’s assassination in 1984. He attended St. Stephen’s College in Delhi and Harvard University in the USA but transferred to Rollins College in Florida after his father’s assassination in 1991. Rahul Gandhi worked as a consultant in London and then established a technology outsourcing firm in Mumbai before entering politics in 2004. He contested and won the Lok Sabha election from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, a seat that was earlier held by his father. He retained his seat in the 2009 and 2014 elections.
Rahul Gandhi became the general secretary of the Congress Party in 2007 and took charge of its youth and student wings. He was elected as the vice president of the party in 2013 and became its de facto prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 election. However, he faced a crushing defeat by Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that year.
However, Rahul Gandhi faced another setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha election when he lost his own seat from Amethi to BJP’s Smriti Irani. He managed to win another seat from Wayanad, Kerala but resigned as the party president taking responsibility for its poor performance at the national level.
