Udit Narayan is a famous Indian playback singer who has sung in more than 30 languages for various films and albums. He has a net worth of $20 million or 150 crore INR according to different sources. He has won several awards for his singing, including five Filmfare Awards and three National Film Awards. He was also honored with the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu by the late King of Nepal and the Padma Shri by the Government of India. He started his career as a staff singer for Radio Nepal and rose to fame after singing for the film Unees Bees in 1980. He is known for his collaborations with many musical directors such as A.R. Udit Narayan is a Nepalese-Indian playback singer who has sung in more than thirty languages and has won many awards for his work. He was born on 1 December 1955 in the Baisi village of Supaul District, Bihar. He started his career as a staff singer for Radio Nepal in 1970, where he sang Maithili, Nepali, and Bhojpuri songs. He moved to Mumbai on a musical scholarship to study classical music at Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan under Pandit Dinkar Kaikini.
He made his Bollywood debut in 1980 with the song “Mil Gaya Mil Gaya” from the movie Unees-Bees, where he got to sing with his idol Mohammed Rafi. His breakthrough came in 1988 when he sang “Papa Kehte Hain” from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which became a huge hit and earned him his first Filmfare award. He also sang for many other successful movies like Dil, Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, and Raja Hindustani. He won three National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards for his singing.
He also acted and sang in some Nepali movies like Kusume Rumal and Pirati, but they were not very successful. He released several solo albums in Nepali and Hindi languages like Upahaar, Bhajan Sangam, I Love You, and Jaanam. He is known for his unique style and voice quality which has been praised by many senior singers and composers. He is also the onscreen voice of many Bollywood superstars like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, and Salman Khan.
He married twice; first to Ranjana Narayan Jha and then to Deepa Narayan Jha (also a singer). He has a son named Aditya Narayan (also a singer) from his second marriage. He faced some controversy when Ranjana filed a case against him asking him to accord her the status of his wife. Later, an agreement was signed between them giving equal rights to both wives.
He was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009 and the Padma Bhushan in 2016 for his contribution to Indian music.
